              Research Issues

Research is fundamental to the development of theory and is of critical importance to the formulation of effective social policy.  In this regard the training of young social scientist at the University level is necessary for the development of a cadre of persons with the relevant  skills in  data gathering, processing and analysis.

This website will provide a number of useful links and resources for social research.

Statistical Literacy: the study of statistics used as evidence in arguments.

This is not the statistics you probably studied in college.  Here the focus is on causality  -- not just on the numbers.  Specifically, the focus is on arguments about causality based on observational studies: the data most common in business, economics, sociology, epidemiology and history.  Although "association doesn't prove causation," the decision-related question is how much support do statistics give a causal argument.  This site addresses that question.

Internet for Social Research Tutorial - UK oriented, but very relevant. A useful 'Links basket' feature allows you to create your own list of links as you walk through the tutorial.
